JOURNALISTS FREED

BUCHAREST, June 8, 2005 – Romanian journalists have been released after being held hostage in Iraq for 54 days, said the Romanian president Traian Basescu. The journalists were freed after the agreement on their exchange was reached. Basescu however said that he could not specify what kind of agreement was achieved, but confirmed that kidnapping was orchestrated by Syrian-born businessman Omar Hayssam and Mohammad Munaf, who claimed to be held captive with the other hostages the entire time. Hayssam was arrested in Bucharest on April 5, but Munaf remained in Iraq under U.S. custody for investigations. The investigation on the journalists’ kidnapping continues in Bucharest and Bagdad.
