24-HOUR STRIKE OF BBC

LONDON, May 24, 2005 – Thousands of the BBC journalists and technicians joined the 24-hour walkout over job cuts. The action caused severe disruption to the corporation’s TV and radio news programmes. The strike, one of the longest in the recent history of the BBC, pulled Radio 4’s flagship shows including Today. Almost all live programmes were replaced with repeats. Acting in solidarity, other national and regional television stations had also broadcast previously recorded shows. The unions estimated a figure of 11 thousand workers joining the walkout over plans to cut four thousand jobs. With the current 28.000 workers, the BBC hopes to save up to 532 million of euros with the planned job cuts.
